Can I bring the lovebirds, Mitch? They haven’t harmed anyone.

June 30th, 2010

Hello!

How have you all been? We have been well. We have been catching up on sleep and living a relatively normal existence that doesn’t involve hotels. Although last night I did dream I was on tour and I had to wake a friend up at 4am to eat fast food. Foul.

So after a little over 2 years of touring, Rearrange Beds has largely been…oh I can’t resist…put to bed. Well sort of. We have a handful of European festivals coming up in the next few weeks. Check them out here.

Summer in Europe is going to be awesome! The shows we have played this year in Germany have been so great. We know these festivals are going to rule! It makes sense to us that the last shows we play for Rearrange Beds are in Germany and Switzerland because they got the record last.

To everyone else all over the world who has come to see us play and supported us and even given us random things from Tim Tams to toy sharks to books to pj’s – THANK YOU! Your support and excitement about An Horse is nothing short of amazing and reaffirming. Every musician knows touring can be amazing, exhilarating and outstanding one minute and very literally the next minute the binary opposite. Playing each night to people who really enjoy what we do, and people who understand we aren’t trying to be anything other than people who like what we do, is pretty unbelievable. We are pretty lucky and we know that! So thank you!

Also of course we want to thank all the incredible bands we have been lucky enough to tour with and work with and hang out with. You are all excellent humans and we want you to know how much we think you are!

Hmmm… on a different note I have this bird called Peter. He is kind of awesome and ugly. He doesn’t have many feathers and he likes to sing which sounds cool BUT he only has two notes. I just put a record on and he started again. He also wakes me up at 6am. Like a barking dog. He just wants to hang out. I don’t usually. As some of you know Damon and I have been busy writing a new record. I have been demo-ing at home and Peter features all over the demo versions of this record. I actually send demos to Damon and our upcoming second album’s producer, the LOVELY Howard Redekopp, with huge warnings in the subject line like this “WARNING AT 2:25 mute for 2 seconds”. Peter’s singing is piercing. I think, he thinks, he is going to come Vancouver with me to actually be on the record. He isn’t but I haven’t told him. I am actually scared of him (hence the random reoccurring The Birds dream I keep having where I am Tippi Hedren. I enjoy the part of the dream where I am a well dressed Tippi sporting a lime green ensemble. I don’t enjoy the part where the birds attack me and stain my outfit with blood).

We are recording RECORD NUMBER 2 (that’s our working title thus far or “Peter SHUT UP”) beginning late July in Vancouver! To say we are excited is a ridiculous understatement. We get to work again with Howard who mixed ‘Rearrange Beds’. We have seen him work on our friends’ records and he exudes a calm that Bodhi exuded for most of Point Break. He kinda lost the calm and his shit in that last Dead Presidents robbery, but we all have bad days right? I feel like we will get to the studio and I will be a Johnny Utah to his Bodhi. I think Damon will also be a Utah. There is no Pappas in An Horse. Pappas kinda looks like my Dad but that’s another story for another blog. So Vancouver, get ready. We are going to see you soon. And more seriously I think I will go to Tofino for a surf.

Okay so sit tight. Keep checking back for updates. We will give you plenty when we are in the studio. If you are in Europe, see you at a festival!!!!

I am going to go for a ride on my new bike. My friend from Bike Curious in Montreal made it for me. It rules and Peter needs to sing along for a bit. Get it off his chest.

Love lovers, it’s all An Horse does.

Kate + Damon.

Beds Rearranged

March 28th, 2010

Hey surfers

How are you all? We are well. Back on tour in the USA. Happy to be here and so happy to see so many of your lovely faces! We wanted to write and let you know that our new remix ep ‘Beds Rearranged’ is out! You can buy it from us at our shows, on itunes and at cool record stores it is available for free with the album. Sounds like a good deal to me.

Some seriously awesome people contributed remixes of 5 An Horse songs: Gerard Smith (TV On The Radio), Bodega Girls, RAC, Mr. F (Tally Hall) and the Phenomenal Handclap Band. Check out our webstore for a serious bargain. Buy an AH tote bag and get the EP for free. FREE. You can put the EP in the bag and take it to your friends’ house and listen to it together and jump on the bed. I did that once, jumped on a bed but it was a top bunk and it broke. My parents got so mad and they got even madder when they discovered my little sister was trapped underneath. She is okay now though.

Don’t forget we have loads of tour dates coming up in the US, Germany and Canada! See here.

In other news Point Break 2 has been titled Point Break Indo. According to imdb.com “A follow-up to the 1991 film, “Point Break”, set 20 years after notorious surfer-turned-safe cracker Bodhi disappeared” Umm so maybe Bodhi survived the 50 year storm and paddled to Indonesia. I like where that is going. Damon suggested that perhaps Agent Utah was holidaying in Bali and stumbled upon Bodhi getting corn rows. CREATIVE GENIUS! Also my sister (the one that got trapped under the top bunk I was jumping on) told me that there is a rumor J-Lo is going to play Goldie Hawn’s character in a remake of the CLASSIC 80′s film ‘Overboard’. This I am way less excited about.

Okay so come out to a one of our shows and say heyyyyyyyy! OH and I forgot to mention that the most amazing Celeste Potter completed the artwork for our EP. I love it. She also helped us out with our new video for ‘Postcards’ that is coming out SOON!

Hello lovers of salt and sea, lovers of snow and ice and lovers in between,

How are you? We are both well! We are currently in Melbourne, Australia. We are busy, busy, busy, writing, writing, writing. It’s very exciting to be back writing!  It’s a long way from airports, planes, vans and buses. It’s very exciting and very refreshing. Sometimes (usually when we are stuck at the US/Canadian border or at an airport at 5am) I wonder what I am doing. Writing makes me remember why we do this! We are very lucky.

We head back to the USA in March to play the AWESOME and exciting mom + pop / frenchkiss SXSW showcase on March 19th with the likes of Les Savy Fav, Freelance Whales and more! AUSTIN, TEXAS. BBQ. OH YEAH.

We then head out and play a handful of our own east coast US shows before we head to Germany for the first time! We are really excited to let you all know that our record is coming out on Grand Hotel van Cleef on March 19. Neither Damon or I have been to Germany. We told you that we would come see you. We keep our promises. There are multiple visits to Germany in the coming months and lots of shows and festivals so be sure to check our dates here. Tickets for all of these shows are on sale now.

Then of course there is our US tour with the fabulous and extremely talented Kaki King. When I first met Kaki I told her a story that Damon had told me about a music festival, a shower cubicle, a soap holder and someones inability to use the toilet correctly. I am clearly avoiding detail. Ask Kaki. Point is, we are very excited to tour with her! We are going all over the place, be sure to have a look. Tickets on sale now!

Oh! Don’t forget we have wonderful new merch items in our merch store. ALL designed by Celeste Potter. We love her artwork so much. We also love her. Check out our online store and have your mind blown.

Finally, Australians! We are doing a handful of shows next week in Melbourne, Perth and Sydney with UK band, The Big Pink. You can get tickets here. Come along and say hi! Oh and Brisbane, we PROMISE we will get to you. And when we do, look out. We are very much looking forward to playing some shows in Australia. It’s been a year!

ALSO Australians from March 19 you will be able to buy a newly released by Shock Records version of Rearrange Beds WITH the new ‘Beds Rearranged’ EP – the remix EP we have been working so hard on. Actually, we didn’t work much harder than “OH MAN! That is awesome!”. People such as Gerard Smith from TV on the Radio, Bodega Girls, The Phenomenal Handclap Band, RAC Collective and Tally Hall worked really hard on remixes of Company, Listen, Shoes Watch, Camp Out and Horizons. If you live in the USA you will be able to buy Beds Rearranged at our shows and digitally soon! People who live elsewhere, we are working on it!

I have to go now and watch the end of Jaws. I am watching it for the 148th time. I am also wearing a Jaws t-shirt and I just found a toy shark in my freezer. I don’t know where it came from. Strange. Oh man, you wouldn’t believe it, they are going to need a bigger boat.

Sail safe!

Six seconds. We’re going to be meat waffles.

January 25th, 2010

It’s been way too long friends but we have been busy working hard trying to impress Tegan and Sara on our tour of Canada together. Thank you to everyone who has come to the shows early and thanks for being amazing audiences. We really appreciate you! Even though we have toured with the lovely and oh so generous T&S before there is ALWAYS the fear that their audience will not like us. Pretty much like if we or ANY band toured with AC/DC. It’s rough. BUT every audience we have encountered has been so amazing. So! THANKS!!!

In other news, as you may have noticed we are heading out on tour with our friend Kaki King in April and May in the USA. We are looking forward to this for many reasons. I will list them for the sake of simplicity:
1) Kaki
2) Spring in the USA
3) Playing on the West Coast
4) Playing on the East Coast
5) Playing between the coasts
6) There are a whole lot more reasons but I can’t really remember them now.

Check tour dates here.

I am really tired. And sore! I spent today snow rafting with T&S and crew. I was scared. Despite Sara Quin’s efforts to have you believe I am an ex-pro surfer, this is not true. I get scared easily. I don’t like roller coasters. I will never bungee jump. I will never sky dive even if Keanu Reeves rang me and said he would re-enact a sky diving scene from Point Break with me (….okay maybe then I would CONSIDER it but only if he agreed that I was Bodhi). So today was scary but completely awesome. I am however feeling a little stiff both physically and mentally.

Also be sure to head over to our merch store. We have some fantastic new t-shirts, tote bags and hoodies up. I think they are all awesome and if I didn’t play in An Horse I would wear/use all of them. To be honest, I wear the KC/DC hoodie at home. It feels good.

We have a handful more shows with Tegan and Sara then Damon and I are bunkering down to finish writing a new record.  Don’t worry we will keep you in the loop. Just make sure you check back in, as we’ll have many exciting announcements in the coming months!

I think, really, the Jolly Roger is the appropriate course of action.

December 14th, 2009

Heya all. Just wanted to say hi.

Kate and I have been off the road now for about 6 weeks. It seems like longer. We’ve been reconnecting with family and loved ones which is nice. And watching new and old Coen Brothers films. I’m in Melbourne right now, and Kate in Montreal. I’m coming into Summer and her into Winter. Here are 2 very different pictures of what we see when we wake up each morning…

What a crazy year. We played over 120 shows this year in over 5 different countries. This year was full of amazing highs and lows. We got to tour with some of our all-time favourite bands like Tegan and Sara, Silversun Pickups, Telekinesis and the Appleseed Cast. We had our record released in Australia and the US, got to play Letterman and SXSW, as well as enjoy incredible support from all of you who came and saw us play night after night and praise and encourage us to keep making music. For that we are so grateful and feel blessed. To have you believe in us is so wonderful. Really.

So lots has been happening behind the scenes these past few weeks. Our debut album Rearrange Beds is finally seeing an official release in Canada. We’ve spent quite a bit of time in Canada this year and feel a warm connection to our Canadian fans. We can’t wait for our album to be released there on December 21 and to come back and tour during January 2010 with Tegan and Sara.

We’ve also been working on a new EP of remixes. We’ve asked some of our favourite artists to remix some songs from Rearrange Beds. The response has been awesome and we are sifting through some remix versions as we speak.

Kate has also been sending me lots of demos of new songs that I’m getting really excited about. After the January tour we are going to take a little time out in Australia to write and arrange songs for album number two.

Speaking of Australia thanks so much you guys for your patience. We receive a lot of messages asking when we’ll be playing at home again. We’re working on it I promise and look forward to playing for you all again.

Look after each other.

Damon
